چکیده

We present an astrometry and photometry catalogue of globular cluster (GC) candidates detected with HST WFPC2 in a sample of 19 early-type galaxies, appropriate for comparison to the lowmass X-ray binary (LMXB) populations observed with Chandra. In a companion paper, we present the Chandra data and investigate the relation between these populations. We demonstrate that, although there is little evidence of a colour-magnitude correlation for the GCs, after estimating mass and metallicity from the photometry, under the assumption of a single age simple stellar population, there is a significant positive correlation between mass and metallicity. We constrained [Z/H] = (−2.1± 0.2) + (0.25± 0.04)log10M, with a 1-σ intrinsic scatter of 0.62 dex in metallicity. If GCs are bimodal in metallicity this relation is consistent with recent suggestions of a mass-metallicity relation only for metal-poor clusters. Adopting a new technique to fit the GC luminosity function (GCLF) accounting for incompleteness and the Eddington bias, we compute the V-band local GC specific frequency (SN) and specific luminosity (SL) of each galaxy. We show that SL is the more robust measure of the richness of a GC population where a significant fraction is undetected due to source detection incompleteness. We find that the absolute magnitude of the GCLF turnover exhibits intrinsic scatter from galaxy to galaxy of ∼0.3 mag (1-σ), limiting its accuracy as a standard distance measure. The Dependence of the Soft X-ray Properties of Lmxbs on the Metallicity of Their Environment

We determine the X-ray spectral properties of a sample of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) which reside in globular clusters of M31, as well as five LMXBs in Galactic globular clusters and in the Large Magellanic Cloud using the ROSAT PSPC. We find a trend in the X-ray properties of the LMXBs as a function of globular cluster metallicity. The spectra of LMXBs become progressively softer as the m...

The Birthplace of Low-mass X-ray Binaries: Field versus Globular Cluster Populations

Recent Chandra studies of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) within early-type galaxies have found that LMXBs are commonly located within globular clusters of the galaxies. However, whether all LMXBs are formed within globular clusters has remained an open question. If all LMXBs formed within globular clusters, the summed X-ray luminosity of the LMXBs in a galaxy should be directly proportional to...

X - Ray Observations of Globular Cluster

A ROSAT HRI X-ray image was obtained of the open globular cluster NGC 288, which is located near the South Galactic Pole. This is the first deep X-ray image of this system. We detect a Low Luminosity Globular Cluster X-ray source (LLGCX) RXJ005245.0−263449 with an X-ray luminosity of (5.5± 1.4)× 1032 ergs s−1 (0.1–2.0 keV), which is located very close to the cluster center. There is evidence fo...

On the Origin of the Metallicity Dependence in Dynamically Formed Extragalactic Low-mass X-ray Binaries

Globular clusters (GCs) effectively produce dynamically-formed low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). Observers detect ∼ 100 times more LMXBs per stellar mass in GCs compared to stars in the fields of galaxies. It has also been observationally established that metal-rich GCs are about 3 times more likely to contain an X-ray source than their metal-poor counterparts. Recent observations have shown tha...

The Trail of Discrete X-ray Sources in the Early-type Galaxy Ngc 4261: Anisotropy in the Globular Cluster Distribution?

Chandra images of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4261 have revealed an anisotropy in the spatial distribution of the off-nuclear X-ray sources, interpreted by Zezas et al. as evidence of an association with a young stellar population. Our independent analysis of archive X-ray (Chandra) and optical (INT and HST) observations confirms the anisotropy of the X-ray sources but conducts to a different int...
